Ada perbedaan pemakaian a few dengan few dan a little dengan little yaitu sebagai berikut :
a. A few dan a little mempunyai sense positif yaitu : biarpun sedikit tetapi masih ada atau dengan kata lain lumayan
contoh :
Rudy has been here only two weeks but he has already made a few friends
artinya : Ia berada disini hanya 2 minggu tetapi telah mempunyai beberapa teman ( tidak banyak tapi ada beberapa)
b. Few and little mempunyai sense negatif yaitu : sedikit dan hampir tidak ada.
Contoh :
She is very arrogant. He has few friends
Artinya :
Ia sangat sombong . Ia punya sedikit teman (tetapi menyatakan hampir tidak ada)
The poor man has very little money so she cant buy anything.
artinya :
Lelaki miskin itu punya uang sangat sedikit sehingga ia tidak bisa membeli apa apa (hampir hampir tidak ada duit)
Tambahan keterangan Expression of Quantity :
Jika subjeknya Uncountable noun = kata kerja tunggal :
contoh :
- All his money was stolen
- A large amount of flour is needed to make a big cake
Jika subjeknya countable noun tunggal= kata kerja tunggal
- Every student at this school wears batik uniform on Fridays
- One student is late today
Jika subjectnya Countable Noun jamak =-kata kerja jamak
contoh :
- Both of girls are may clasmates
- Some children are sitting under the tree
A number of + Noun = kata kerja jamak…A number of students are in the laboratory now
The number of + Noun = kata kerja tunggal…The number of students at this class is forty
